WHO AND WHAT IS
TURNING WORM?
Turning Worm was set up in early 2004 by Piers Miller and Dave
Jackson. The idea was to try to make a living from having fun and
creating fun situations for other people. At the moment some of our
shenanigans include: Music promotion, Event management, Music
production, Selling stuff, Making you cash.
It all started at Colour in Camden as a way for Piers & Dave
to have
a cheap night out whilst watching some of their favourite bands and
DJs.
There have been some storming nights with
most of the capitals best up-and-coming bands and some very well
known faces putting in an appearance. Momentum has built and Turning
Worm Presents has spread to a variety of other venues including some
Friday nights at the beautiful Bush
Hall and
some Sundays at Heavenly Records
wonderful venue The Social, W1
The Monday nights at Colour have gone from strength to strength
and
have developed a regular crowd of Tuesday-skiving beautiful people.
Some of the most memorable nights have included a rammed
turbo-charged gig from all girl garage band The
Priscillas
A completely out there performance
from the legendary Sky
Saxon of The Seeds returning to these shores after
many years absence and choosing Turning Worm Presents as his first
London date. A jail-bait fiesta as Hypo
Psycho
brought teenage pandemonium to
Inverness street and played a very good set of Ska pop indeed.
Flotation Toy Warning
have delivered consistently wonderful shows at
several of our venues with their soaring semi-operatic compositions.
Rothko have bombarded
us with double bassed melodic assaults of
outstanding natural beauty.
Piers & Dave have spent an unhealthy amount of time with
The Young Offenders
Institute this year both live
and in the studio in London and in Manchester. Their two secret
London gigs at Turning Worm Presents were a predictably brilliant,
visceral and frightening affair and we'll be getting them back
down from Manchester whenever they're all out of jail. The beautiful
and strange Cast Off crew have
inspired us with their performance knitting.
Circulus have brought their
astounding acid-folk-rock-Moog-crumbhorn
shenanigans to the party with devastating effects. Morton
Valence
have got better and better (and they were bloody marvellous to start
with)
as they have played all our venues seemingly adding a member with
each gig.
We love them but will we be able to fit them all on stage in six months?
A great time was had by all until the police turned up (publicly
burning an effigy of Andrew Neil is a bad idea kids) at The Fix short
film festival. Blinding DJ sets have come from Bristol's The
Outlaws
The magnificent mixology of Dr
Moody delighted us all and a live set at
the Social with his band The Ill Patients was simply astounding. That
evening coincided with the Turning Worm debut of Ed “Ravey”
Davey
(real DJ name EdStep) introducing us to his madly eclectic bag of
beats. The Mr Men based absurdity of the Acapulco Gold sets have
appalled and amused in equal measure. Crazy Chesters Wheels Of Steel
have been loathsome. Resident DJ, DJ Dan The DJ has been so danceable
that quite a few of us have stopped bothering to bring our record
bags. Our latest DJ acquisition has been the gorgeous Truckin’
Lauras
with their bizarre bag of truckin’ records (yes it does include
Convoy) and original rock n’ roll.
At Bush Hall we have seen some awesome line ups including
The Pipettes, Circulus
and Kitty,
Daisy and Lewis. All in
one night! Crivens. Campag Velocet came and played their last ever
gig with us in this beautiful Edwardian ballroom and we were
honoured. In support that wondrous evening DieMunch Machine pinned
us to the walls with their intricately insane noise and Lux
Luther
opened proceedings with songs of exceptional beauty.
Nizlopi who we first saw at last
years In The City beatboxed
and strummed their way into the
audiences hearts, and in fact into the audience.
That’s enough yarning on for now but some of our new
favourite bands and songwriters that you can come and see at Turning
Worm nights
include........... Toby
Macfarlaine, The Standards, Elwood Grace,
Action Plan, Sterling Roswell,
The Kittens, 18th
Day of May, Rises
We have also branched out into the world of art and are curating an
exhibition of “The Visionary Artwork of Paul
Squire” at The Mac Bar on
Camden Road. If you didn’t come to the launch party get down
there and have a gander.
If you like this kind
of thing then here are some other great nights to know about:
Low down and dirty garage/new
rock and roll at The Dirty
Water Club
Pub rock and country in
a friendly atmosphere at Come
Down And Meet The Folks
Avant garde rock and roots
in Byker Grove surroundings at Tapestry
Artrocker
doing just what it says on the can.
